Profile

After completing his doctoral dissertation in cultural anthropology in the University of Tehran, Asghar Izadi-Jeiran has started two research projects.

The first project, which has started since 2015, is about urban poverty and has been doing among two different poor and marginal neighborhoods in Northwest and West Iran. The main aim of the project is documenting mental and physical illnesses, domestic violence, and substance abuse as the chronic and concrete effects of violence of poverty, everyday life and historically embedded structural violence. Especial emphasis is placed on the hurts inflicted onto children and women.

The second project, which has started since 2017, is about Afghan refugees and immigrants in Iran, who had escaped from a war-torn society in recent decades. Based on Central Iran, the ethnography of this project contains two directions: on the one hand, the cultural violence which forms the category of inferior and legitimates physical and institutional violence, on the other hand, the everyday life of Afghans in a state of ongoing fear and anxiety which reverberates in the individual and collective experiences.

The theoretical and ethnographic focus of both projects is on the embodiment of violence and stressful social conditions. Therefore, the body, suffering, and power are key elements in organizing the framework of these ethnographic-historical studies. By an interest in psychological and medical anthropology, Izadi-Jeiran addresses the emotional and physiological responding to violence and analyses the macro and micro-politics of care and neglect. A leading concern is the resistance and resilience of individuals, families, and communities in the face of economic adversity and socio-cultural intimidation.
